The yellow graduated board is a water level indicator showing a range between 75 metres above sea level at the bottom to 78 metres above sea level at the top. In October 2000 there was severe flooding here, with the water reaching the tops of the arches of the bridge, and the brook bursting its banks. There are photographs of this event here http://www.brookmans.com/galleries/floods/index.shtml It was this flood event that lead to the implementation of the Warrengate Lane Flood Alleviation Scheme.
