The building itself is believed to be about 200 years old, but records of its use as an ale-house first appear in the 1841 census. It was rumoured that there was a tunnel from the inn to the shore used by smugglers, but no proof of this has been found. At one time the inn had stabling for horses. The inn is thought to have been modernised around 1930. Today the main bar has a pool table, and a separate bar is used for diners. The inn serves excellent food at reasonable prices.
