'Boys' School Gates, Sandbed Road, Neepsend, Sheffield

The school - Hillfoot School - has long gone but the 'Boys' gates are still there ... there is no sign of the 'Girls' or 'Infants' gates, they were probably on Waterford Road. The building behind the gates is a modern Industrial Unit of which there are many in the area. Update in 2012 I have been contacted by Roy Priest who was a pupil at this school circa 1953 - known then as Hillfoot County School - and remembers climbing these gates, when the school was closed for the night, to retrieve the 'gang football' ... he also confirms that there was a double gate, for Girls and Infants, on Waterford Road. The big grey 'School Meal Van' also used these gates when delivering each day. There were separate Boys, Girls and Infants doors into the School Building. The senior pupils were taught in a post-war prefab annex at the top end of the yard. In 1955 the school yard, being very large, was used for rehearsals for the Queen's visit to Sheffield Wednesday's ground. He and other small children were put in rows and bent forward to reveal the words 'Welcome to Sheffield.' Thanks Roy
