These rooms, 60 feet underground, were built to provide access to gun emplacements which were designed to provide cover for the moat area. In 1946 a party was held here and men from the local Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron painted the walls. Two motorboats can be seen on the right of the picture. The rooms have no lights and are in complete darkness so the picture was taken by using a torch to work out where to shoot and then a flash - hoping that the camera was pointing at the right place!
