With the exception of the bridge carrying Preston Road over the canal, all of Linithgow's bridges have the same layout with the road on the downhill side taking a sharp bend after crossing the water, thereby avoiding a long tail with a gradual slope into the town. The bridge is at the eastern end of the largest basin in this section of the canal, variously referred to as The Canal basin, Manse Road Basin or the Station Basin from its proximity to Linlithgow railway station
