The grave of Private J. Cowan in Balmoral Cemetery in Belfast. An Australian national, Private Cowan was a native of Melbourne, but his parents (John Cowan and Sarah Apsley Cowan) lived in Freemantle, West Australia. Fighting for the 48th Bn. of the Australian Infantry, he was wounded in action and, after evacuation to England, died of his wounds at Birmingham General Hospital. He is buried in Belfast in the plot also occupied by his great grand-parents and grandfather who was also killed in action in WW1 - see Image The inscription at the foot of the headstone reads "WEIGHED IN THE BALANCE AND NOT FOUND WANTING"
