In the centre of the main structure of the building is this interesting coat of arms depicting weaponry. The lettering is: DEI GRATIA SCIENTIA PRODERIT which may be translated "By the grace of God, knowledge will advance". Update 2020: When Dave submitted this photo he asked for assistance in deciphering the rather effaced inscription. After 12 years, research by a number of Geograph moderators has at last enabled this to be done. It is believed to have been the motto of the Sheffield School Board.
