Adjacent to the Wellington monument at the top of William Brown Street are a set of standard measures. These provided a public facility where measuring instruments - rulers, tapes, chains, etc. - could be checked for accuracy. Laid in the granite here are standards of 100 feet and the traditional chain of 100 links, measuring 66 feet or one tenths of a furlong. Unfortunately the fundamental start marks have been removed at some stage, represented by the rough area near the nearer end. Details of some of the insets can be seen here:Image Image .
