PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
PAYMENT OF BENEFITS AND PENSIONS BY AUTOMATED CREDIT TRANSFER (28 March 1993)
Motion Details
That this House expresses serious concern about the Department of Social Security's intention to switch payments of income support to automated credit transfer by October, and incapacity benefits by next January; further notes that the Department is encouraging pensioners to switch to automated credit transfer, as reported in the Observer newspaper on 28th March; considers these proposals will seriously disadvantage elderly and infirm people and those benefit recipients without bank accounts and also threaten the future livelihood of many sub-post offices; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Social Security to withdraw the proposals immediately.
