PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
LE PEN VISIT (21 June 1993)
Motion Details
That this House expresses its opposition to the planned visit of French fascist Jean Marie Le Pen and 14 other extreme right wing MEPs to Edinburgh in the week beginning 5th July with the intention of holding a meeting of the European Right group; considers that in the light of the already rising incidence of racist attacks in Scotland and an increase in fascist activity there, that the visit is intended to encourage racist attacks and a fascist ideology in Scotland; notes that the visit will be paid for from European Parliament funds, the latest in a series of meetings to be given such financial assistance, but that there is no Scottish MEP belonging to this group and that there is no reason for the meeting to be held in Scotland other than to use it to stimulate support for fascist ideas in that country; notes that there has already been widespread opposition to the planned visit; calls for action from the Government to prevent the visit in the interests of stopping a further rise in racial tension and racial attacks; and futher calls for the Prime Minister to make concern about the effects of it known.
