PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
WEST COAST MAIN LINE (20 July 1993)
Motion Details
That this House expresses grave concern about the deteriorating physical condition of, and the declining standard of services on, the United Kingdom's premier InterCity rail route, the West Coast Main Line; notes that the line serves a catchment population of 15 million people, including five major conurbations, and is of great strategic importance to the Midlands, the North West, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and their links with continental Europe; urges Her Majesty's Government and British Rail to bring forward an urgent programme of investment in the route which would greatly assist with the emergence of the regions from recession; and calls upon her Majesty's Government to ensure that the ú150 million leasing facility announced in the Autumn Statement goes to provide InterCity 225 trains for the West Coast Main line in the interests of the rolling stock industry, the economy and the travelling public.
