Boatmen's Rest, Walsall Branch Canal, Birchills
Situated next to Walsall Top Lock. The blue plaque reads 'Built 1900-1901 by the Incorporated Seamen and Boatmens' Friend Society one of only two such boaters' missions surviving in the Black Country'. At the time of its opening the locks were used by 200 barges a day bringing coal and goods from the Wyrley & Essington Canal to the north into the wharves in Walsall.

Walsall top lock, 1987
The Walsall is a very dirty canal, and here it was necessary to clear rubbish away from the top gate to open it properly. Further down the remains of a sprung mattress had to be cut away from the propellor - not a pleasant task.
