Whelley Loop Line - Rose Bridge Junction
This is where the loop line connected with the Springs Branch. To the left of this junction was Wigan Ironworks, known locally as Top Place. These links show how it was in the 1960s: http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=3&id=5206&gallery=Railways&offset=80 http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=3&id=5207&gallery=Railways&offset=80 http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=3&id=5208&gallery=Railways&offset=80

Cycleway on the former Whelley Loop Line
The line was an avoiding line for the West Coast Main Line, by-passing Wigan. It left the WCML south of Springs Branch sheds, and rejoined it south of Standish. For much of its length it is now a cycling route. From the green fingerpost sign in the pic, giving cycling times from here to various points around, there would appear to be a cycling network in the Borough, but it is little publicised.

The Oak Tree, Belle Green Lane
Note the open-sided wooden structure on the far right - after the ban on smoking inside pubs landlords have often erected temporary canvas shelters for their recalcitant smokers. This looks a little more permanent.
