Mesnes Park, Wigan
Mesnes Park occupies a 12 hectare site immediately to the north-west of Wigan town centre. The land had been meadow and pasture, but by 1847 supported two collieries. Wigan Corporation purchased the site after 1871 and it was opened as a public park in 1878. The park features number of Victorian park features including a bandstand, a pavilion and a Pulhamite rock feature. Mesnes Park is currently undergoing a multi million pound restoration scheme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The park remains open to the general public whilst its facilities are being upgraded.

Thomas Linacre Centre (The Old Grammar School), Wigan
The first Wigan Grammar School was endowed in 1597. This building, on Parsons Walk was the fourth school, opened in 1937 (http://www.wigangrammarschool.co.uk/School4.htm Wigan Grammar School). After the grammar school closed in 1972, it became Mesnes High School until 1989, and then the Mesnes Building of Wigan College. It was designated a Grade II listed building in 1997 (http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-484939-mesnes-building-of-wigan-college- British Listed Buildings). Since 2003, it has been known as the Thomas Linacre Centre and is an out-patient department for the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust (http://www.wwl.nhs.uk/Internet/Home/Hospitals/tlc.asp ).
