Mobile covers ... uncovered
These wheeled frames, at Hale Barns Cricket Club, will need some 'covers' if they are to do their summer job of protecting the pitch on this South Manchester ground where long, hot, dry spells are not the norm.

Young trees in Flaxhigh Covert, Hale Barns
Amazingly - considering the wholesale obliteration of landscape that has taken place in post-war Hale Barns and Ringway - this 'covert' is unchanged in size, shape and boundaries since the Hale map of 1872. Landowners deliberately left isolated sections of woodland and undergrowth amidst their fields, as cover for wildlife and game: hence,'covert'.

Rural calm?
View over Hale Barns cricket ground. A few years from now, work is due to start on a rail station, for the HS2 project, to serve passengers for Manchester Airport. The proposed line will run in a tunnel to the east of Hale Barns village and will surface beyond the trees in the photo - the location for the proposed new station. (We have the prospect of cricket lovers from London travelling directly to Hale Barns to see the local team at play!)
