The Punchbowl and Ladle Inn, Penelewey
Grade II Listed late 17th century public house. Parts of the building date back to the 15th century but during the 17th century it was a hostelry for travellers crossing the river Fal on the King Harry Ferry. Reputedly part of it was used as a customs house. John Green, innkeeper of The New Inn (now a private dwelling), by 1919 was part-time licenses of both establishments. On the 5th March 1919 the Royal Cornwall Gazette announced the granting of a full‑time licence to The Punchbowl and Ladle and The New Inn then closed. Variously spelt including Penalney and Penelewy directory entries are difficult to locate but it appears to have been in the Wellington family for many years; 1856-1897 Richard Wellington; 1902-1914 Mrs Eliza Wellington. It is impossible to say if it was the same Richard there for 41 years or more.
