Exit from the emergency staircase
Porthcurno is strongly associated with telegraphy, with a large number of telegraph cables (and latterly fibre optics) landing on the beaches here from all parts of the globe. During the war, this became vital communications which were potentially vulnerable to attack, so the facilities were moved into bunkers by digging tunnels into the cliff. This is the clifftop above the bunkers, which can be accessed by the emergency stairwell.

The escape staircase at Porthcurno cable station
Now a museum, the cable station was an important location during WWII and underground caverns were excavated into the hillside to protect the installation from aerial attack. This escape staircase provided an exit route in case of the portals being obstructed. The two signs in the foreground are warning visitors that swallows are nesting at the top of the stairs Image
