Copper beech in spring, Union Street, Torquay
The leaves of the beech tree are a little translucent in the sunlight as they have just broken out from the buds. This is a specimen tree that must have been planted in the late 19th or early 20th century. The colour of the bark complements the pale shades of red.

Pine tree, Union Street, Torquay
This may be a Monterey pine tree. These were introduced in 1833 and thrive in the South West. The bark is characteristically deep fissured and there are many cones left on the tree - it was called the "remarkable cone pine" for its habit of retaining cones for many years, even decades. This tree is in the small park opposite the old Torbay hospital which was given to the patients and staff of the hospital in 1897.
