Taken from the car park. Cherry & Pevsner: "The proportions of the tower, with its tall pinnacles, are Perp, although the detail, disconcertingly, is transitional Gothic ... local grey limestone with generous Ham Hill dressings".

Buckfast Abbey on a wet day
The abbey church is grade 2* listed (list entry 1209774). The marquees were part of a bell ringing festival. Unsurprisingly, nearly everyone was indoors, either in one of the marquees or the Abbey itself.

Buckfast Abbey, part of an active Benedictine monastery, was first founded in 1018, rebuilt 1134-36 and became rich from medieval wool trade. Dissolved 1539 but rebuilt again from late-Victorian times, reconsecrated 1932. www.buckfast.org.uk
