The Golden Cross (1), High Street
One of the village's two pubs, this one is on the High Street, which here is part of the A4117 Cleobury Mortimer to Ludlow road. To confuse matters, the pub has replaced its previous pub sign with one showing a St. George's Cross. However it still seems to be known as The Golden Cross. Image Image

The Golden Cross (2), High Street
The pub has boards on the front and end walls proclaiming it is The Golden Cross. Its previous pub sign used to show one, but now it sports the St. George's Cross instead. The Golden Cross was usually a reference to the medieval crusades, but the historical St. George is believed to have lived in very early Christian times, long before the crusades. So St. George never went to the crusades, and probably never slayed a dragon either. Quite what his cross is doing on the sign is therefore a bit of a puzzle. Image Image

The Golden Cross or The St. George's Cross (pub sign), High Street
The pub seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis. The pub still has boards up saying The Golden Cross, but this recent sign says otherwise. Maybe it is a hangover from the 2010 World Cup football mania. All the recent references on the net still seem to refer to it as The Golden Cross. But whatever it's called, it's good that it is open and still with us, when so many others in Shropshire and elsewhere have closed. Image Image
