Shops on Newcastle Street, Middleport
Looking at the junction of Lucas Street (on the left) with Newcastle Street. The building on the corner has interesting architecture above the upper floor, with the date 1886 in the centre. The right-hand side of this building is a pub, The Jolly Carter.

Dalehall Works, Burslem, steam engine
This was originally the works of Dunn, Bennett & Co Ltd but by 1984 was Steelite International. The company is still in business and makes corporate pottery for organisations like the NHS and big chain hotels. This horizontal single cylinder engine is c13" x 24" and claimed to be possibly 1850s and installed secondhand in 1948. The expansion slide valve with crankshaft governor control does not seem 1850s to me and implies either a retrofit or a later date. In 1984 it was still in use but was then used for a while to circulate steam for the factory heating. By 2002 it was disused but I believe it can still be demonstrated on compressed air.

Dalehall Works, Burslem, steam engine
An engine of unknown make and date that was still running in early 1984 and is believed to remain in situ although out of use for many years. I believe it can be demonstrated on compressed air.

Steelite International - Dalehall Works
Formerly Dunn, Bennett & Co, this pottery has seen considerable investment in recent years. This is one of the older parts and in a basement somewhere near here is a disused steam engine that I saw running in the 1980s - Image
