Hartfield Parade, Canvey Island
A rather ramshackle parade of shops from Canvey Island's past. Its site is particularly interesting for once housing the Kynoch Club, the name associated with the Kynochs explosive works across Holehaven Creek, whose site is currently occupied by Coryton refinery. Kynochs operated there from 1896 to 1919, and in 1923 the site was sold to Corys. Kynochs bought 200 acres of land on Canvey Island to house some of their very large workforce, and this parade looks to be in the style of some of their building at Kynochtown. I cannot find any definite confirmation of Kynochs being the builders here, though. It may be significant that the very faded 'Kynoch Club' still visible on the frontage of the third bay along seems at one time to have been 'Cory Club' - or it may be 'Cosy Club'! Old 'Kynochs Club' sign, Canvey Island
Earlier, which is surprising, the sign seems to have said, in red, 'Cosy Club' or perhaps 'Cory Club'. The former doors to the club are directly under, between two shops. For a general view and discussion, see Image

Away from the central shopping area the High Street is lined with housing. Here by the junction with Hope Road a First bus collects a passenger from the Lappmark Road bus stop.
