Building work at the site of the former Bay Horse
The Bay Horse on the corner of Talbot Road and Victoria Street was built around 1928 on land that the British Oil Stores Ltd had sold to the Hempshaw Brewery of Stockport in 1927. Its licence had been transferred from a small licensed house on Victoria Street called the Bay Horse Inn. The old Bay Horse dated back to 1825 when it was called the Horse and Jockey until the name was changed in 1872. It was demolished in 1882. The new Bay Horse became a Robinsons house Image popular in the 1960s and 70s with workers from two big ICI factories nearby. The landlady from 1965 was Marjory Moores (better known as Madge). She could be seen most evenings at the bar with a glass of milk and was owner of the pint pot which served the last pint in the old Bay Horse. Thanks to Paul Taylor's book, "A History of the Pubs of Hyde and District" for most of this information. It closed down in 2011 and was boarded up Image It was finally demolished in 2016 Image According to plans posted in 2015 Image a Co-op superstore is to be built on what was the beer garden area whilst the site of the pub itself will be the car park with two separate retail units at the rear. Building work has now started.
