View from Long Lane towards new residential development
Long Lane was the original narrow country road running south from the Thornhill crossroads on the A33. It is now a pedestrian/cycle track and a sizeable residential development has been constructed to the east and south.

The Park Pale
The name refers to the embankment protected by the fence. This earthwork is a surviving section of the park pale of Old Basing, sometimes called the Pyotts Hill Entrenchment. It would have enclosed an area set aside as a deer park. The exact date of the construction is not known, but it is essentially a medieval earthwork (11th to 15th century).

Lillymill Chine
Basingstoke really is pushing the limits (to my mind) as to where build new houses here. Just to the right is a medieval earthwork known as The Park Pale. The buildings themselves were built in a woodland. All very nice for the residents, shame about the encroachment into the countryside.
