Mona Mill
Having bemoaned this mill's demolition, I suddenly found a couple of shots. You can see that part of the mill to the left of the tower had already been demolished. It also seems that there's no chimney. Built 1905, architect F W Dixon, 90,456 spindles, George Saxon 1400 hp engine. Production ceased 1959 then in multi-occupancy. Site is now a housing estate.

Fields New Road
Archetypal northern industrial town scenery - terraced houses with a textile mill looming in the background. The elements of this photo that show that it is from the modern era are a) the factory chimney has been shortened -it would have had a decorative cap, b) the lack of chimney pots on the housing and c) the speed hump on the road. Despite the serried ranks of terraced houses, this road predates the urbanisation of the area.

Nile Mill
Substation. The lintel carries the date 1922, but it's not clear whether this was date of building or the alterations that have clearly taken place since. The mill itself is much earlier.

Mona Mill
The engine house is back left. Part of the mill had been reduced in height to the right of the tower. I don't know if the metal work on top of the tower had originally been clad.

Nile Mill, Hollinwood
Never mind "Dark Satanic Mills" I prefer "Britain's bread hangs by Lancashire's thread". Cotton spinning mill that was powered by a very large beam engine. No longer used for textiles and with a truncated chimney.

Nile Mill
Courtyard along the east front. There are blocked-up openings in the wall to the left which are probably World War II air raid shelters.

Nile Mill. Notice the cracking at the top right hand corner of this very substantial tower.
