Before the M60
Taken in late 1988 from Hollinwood station platform, which extended over Bower Lane bridge, Hollinwood Avenue became Bower Lane where the road narrows. The bridge was notorious for demolishing double-deck buses due to reduced height. The terraced houses are vestigial remnants of Bower Colliery's surroundings. The ex-Ferranti factory was being converted for use by Mirror Group newspapers. The scene has been transformed completely by the advent of the M60 motorway.

Wasting away
The view from the corner of Hollinwood Avenue and Long Lane, well before the M60's coming. The Rochdale Canal is on the left with former cotton mills on Whitegate Lane, Chadderton, visible in the distance. A great place to mess about on as a kid.
