Blue-flowered crop of Scorpion weed (Phacelia tanacetifolia)
Many thanks to davidbr on the forum of http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ for identifying the plant for me. The flowers of this North American annual Image are very attractive to insects and were alive with bumblebees. It has likely been grown for this purpose, to produce an organic green manure or to attract hoverflies for biological control of pest species http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phacelia_tanacetifolia If you have Quicktime installed, you can immerse yourself in Robin Wilson's field here http://robinwilson.net/phaceliacu/phacelia.html
