Highgate Underground station - abandoned high level platforms
This picture was taken from the end of the now abandoned high level platforms at Highgate. Originally, a railway line used to run between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace. It was partially converted to electrical operation but the plans were abandoned during the Second World War. The modern station platform buildings were designed by Charles Holden and is probably the best preserved derelict building by this architect.

The building would have been topped by a statue of Dick Whittington and his cat by Eric Aumonier who created Image After the war, maintenance works and reconstruction of war damage on the existing network had the greatest call on London Underground funds.
