Sowerby Bridge: Jubilee Refreshment Rooms
This is the only part of the original station that has survived. This is well worth a visit - I think it opened about two years ago. Thus Sowerby Bridge joins a select small group of stations having refreshment facilities which include real ale and good food. The only ones I know about besides Sowerby Bridge are Stalybridge, Huddersfield, Bridlington and Bury (Bolton Street) - the last being on the preserved East Lancashire Railway. All these are in northern England. If anyone knows of other examples, I would be very pleased to hear of them. If such establishments were more widespread, it would be a distinct incentive to encourage rail travel.

Coal chutes, Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire
A once-common feature of Britain, most such coal chutes had disappeared by the time this 1987 photograph was taken. The ones here are intact, but out of use: coal is now delivered to the yard by lorry. There are 14 chutes in the picture which gives some idea of the very heavy coal traffic once reaching this area by rail.
