The Cross Keys, 8 Lairgate, Beverley
A Grade II* Listed mid 18th century inn. Pevsner dates it around 1765 and by 1791 coaches ran from 'Mr John Smith’s Cross Keys Inn' to Hull. At the time Lairgate was called Back Street. The first listed victualler was a Mr Bowman in 1770. It sold for £1,000.00 in 1809 to John Simpson of Beverley inn-holder, by Richard Simpson innkeeper, of Leconfield. It was advertised for sale again in 1832 after which George Green is listed from 1834 to 1855 as victualler. Directory entries also include; 1823 William Clayton; 1828 William Sissons; 1834-1855 George Green; 1892-1893 Christopher Keighley; 1913 Henry Millett. Around the start of the 20th century an advertisement declares it as 'Good Accommodation for Cyclists, &c.' with 'Good Stabling and Grand Billiard Room'. Much later it had a £2.1m refurbishment by JD Wetherspoons opening in April 2016.
