Petworth House
Petworth House is a late 17th century country house in the small town of Petworth. For centuries it was the southern home for the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland and is considered to be the most important residence in Sussex. It is built using local freestone ashlar with Portland stone for the ornamental sections. Petworth House also has an extensive deer park landscaped by Capability Brown. The park covers 700 acres and is home to the largest herd of fallow deer in England. The house was rebuilt in 1688 and altered in the 1870s. Petworth is famous for its extensive art collection. Charles Seymour the 6th Duke of Somerset was inspired by the rebuilding of a baroque Versailles from 1661, then paid for rebuilding Petworth to rival this new European palace.
