Guildford Locomotive Depot
View SW from the main road bridge, the tunnel south of the Station being off to the left: ex-LSW Waterloo - Portsmouth main line; also ex-SE&C Redhill - Reading line. The cramped, unusual roundhouse has few occupants. The locomotive on the right is SR (ex-SE&C) Maunsell N class 2-6-0 No. 31816 (built 12/21, withdrawn 1/66).

Platform 4, Guildford station
Looking south along the 'down' main line from the end of platform 4 at Guildford station. The A31 Farnham Road bridge is evident, under which it is just possible to make out the entrance to the tunnel under the chalk of the North Downs.

USA tank loco at Guildford
The Guildford shed pilot - USA tank 30072. The locomotive is a US Army Transportation Corps class S100 0-6-0T, built in 1943 in the USA. It was bought by the Southern Railway in 1946/7, and used at Southampton Docks (where a short wheelbase was required). It became SR 72, then BR 30072. In 1963, when diesel shunters had taken over at Southampton, USA tanks replaced the ex-LSWR class B4 at Guildford. Classmate 30064 also performed this duty - Image Both were finally withdrawn in 1967. Four locos survive (including 30072 & 30064), out of 15 that were bought by the SR. Two more have been imported from Yugoslavia.
