Saint Swithun's Way - Sign with the Scallop Shell Pilgrim's Logo
The pilgrims coming from Winchester and the West of England would bring back a shell that would be picked up from Dover on their way to the Holy lands, Rome or Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. https://artsymbol.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/the-scallop-shell-it-is-not-without-reason-that-the-pilgrims-returning-from-the-threshold-of-saint-james-bear-shells/ It is possible the symbol has been used even before the year 1000 AD.
