Alexandra Warehouse, Gloucester Docks
In the foreground is the junction of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal (left), the Main Basin http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6095320 (right) and the Barge Arm (behind the camera). A tour boat is moored opposite, with Alexandra Warehouse behind. The warehouse was built in 1870 to store corn, later sugar. It burned down after five years but was rebuilt immediately.

A visit to Gloucester Docks in 1997 had the happy coincidence of a couple of talls ships tied up in the harbour. Taken on film and scanned with no further processing.

Main Basin, Gloucester Docks
The view is diagonally across the Main Basin (opened in 1827) towards the dry docks (1827 and 1853) http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6097214 in the opposite corner. The building at the centre is Alexandra Warehouse http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6097258 (1870). On the right are modern apartment buildings designed in keeping with the look of the warehouses. These are on the site of the former West Quay warehouses, which were built in the 1830s and demolished in the 1960s. Llanthony Warehouse http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6097138 (1873) on the left now houses the National Waterways Museum. To its right can be seen Llanthony lift bridge http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4680396 through which the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal (1827) leaves the basin towards the Severn estuary. https://www.gloucesterdocks.me.uk/gloucester/docks.htm
