Paignton - Bradford holiday express near Haresfield, 1956
On a peak Summer Saturday the regular 'Devonian' express to/from Bradford/Leeds - Torbay had to have Reliefs, this being the 06.55 Paignton - Bradford, headed by Stanier Class 5 No. 44743, one of the 10 modified examples with Caprotti valve-gear (built 7/48, withdrawn 1/66).

Down 'Cornishman' near Haresfield, 1961
View northward, towards Cheltenham and Birmingham: 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 7013 'Bristol Castle' (built 4/24 as No. 4082 'Windsor Castle', exchanged in 2/52 its name and number with the first 'Bristol Castle' (built 7/48), to haul the Royal Funeral Train of King George VI on 13/2/52, withdrawn eventually 2/65). The train is the Down (southbound) 'Cornishman', 09.15 Wolverhampton - Penzance: from 11/9/62 it was completely re-routed to run from Sheffield via Birmingham New Street.

Haresfield: Summer Saturday expresses, 1961
View southward on the Gloucester - Bristol/Swindon main lines: four-track Tuffley Junction - Standish Junction. As Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 (with Stephenson link motion and roller-bearings) No. 44775 (built 4/47, withdrawn 10/67) heads the 09.50 Weston-super-Mare - Birmingham New Street express, a southbound express passes on the left - probably a WR train. On such days the traffic was constant along here.

Northbound Summer Saturday express near Haresfield, 1961
View southward towards Bristol and Bath, also Swindon on the ex-GWR - see other Haresfield scenes for details. The 10.15 Teignmouth - Bradford express is headed by rebuilt Royal Scot Class 7P 4-6-0 No. 46101 'Royal Scots Grey' (built 9/27, rebuilt 11/45, withdrawn 9/63). Recently, since the Type 4 Diesels had come along to work WCML expresses, 'Royal Scots' had become commonplace on the ex-Midland main lines.
