Redding Colliery Memorial
25th September 1923, the colliery was flooded, trapping many miners, killing 40. The memorial commemorates the dead: John Forrester David Porteous Frank McGarvie Michael McKenna Andrew Anderson William Anderson Patrick Shields James Hannah Thomas Aitken Thomas Thomson,junr. Thomas Kilgannan David Brown Thomas Brown John Lennie Wright Thomas Thomson (2) James Marrs Laurence T. Scobbie David Thomson Jas. Scott Irving Alex. Hamilton Laurence Thomson William Donaldson Colin Maxwell, senr. Thomas Bonar John Baxter Walter Maxwell Archibald McNee David Bennie Robert Thomson Andrew Brown Henry Thomson Robert Beveridge John Beekman Thomas Thomson (1) James Adam Colin Maxwell, junr. Michael McLaughlin James Jarvie James Cochrane and while 25 were rescued on the day, the memorial also commemorates five men who were finally rescued after being trapped for 10 days. The memorial was erected by the Sir William Wallace Grand Lodge of Free Colliers.
