No longer the Otter
At one time this stream would have been part of the wide estuary of the River Otter. Following the formation of the Budleigh Salterton shingle bank, the main river now only flows along the eastern side of the flood plain. This stream is all that remains of the river on the western side.

This cricket pitch has been built on low lying ground to the east of the village. 400 years ago this would have been underwater, and cricket would have been impossible; not that they played cricket then of course. Too busy fishing and salting. The flood plain of the River Otter extends to the fir trees.

This cricket pitch has been built on low lying ground to the east of the village. 400 years ago this would have been permanently underwater. Now, it just looks as though it is occasional.
