A small plaque on the wall of the building commemorates the first meeting of the Pickwick Bicycle Club, which was held at this pub.

The Downs, Downs Road, Hackney
Now flats, it was built in 1863 as The Downs Hotel. It closed in 2007. The Pickwick Bicycle Club, the oldest surviving cycling club in the world, first met here on 22nd June 1870 and it was their first headquarters.
