London Hydraulic Power Company, Shadwell
Hydraulic power was once important in London as in other cities. A network of hydraulic mains extended for many miles and was controlled from the headquarters in Shadwell, built in 1880. But hydraulic power went out of fashion as electricity became more convenient, and the company went out of business in the 1930s. The buildings are now used as an arts centre.

Shadwell Basin
By comparison with nearby Limehouse Basin and St Katharine Docks, both similar dockland basins still very much alive with boats, this is the quiet one. I like boats, and to me this place seems a bit bleak with nothing going on any more, but I'm sure the residents appreciate the tranquility.

The buildings of the former "London Hydraulic Power Company"
This, the Wapping Hydraulic Pumping Station, was one of five stations, originally powered by coal powered steam engines. "The system was used as a cleaner and more compact alternative to steam engines, to power workshop machinery, lifts, cranes, theatre machinery, and the backup mechanism of Tower Bridge. It was also used to supply fire hydrants, mostly those inside buildings. The water, pumped straight from the Thames, was heated in winter to prevent freezing." (Source; Wiki)
