Old milestone
The first of the West Riding CC milestones set up in 1893/94 on the 27 miles from Doncaster to Tadcaster. This one was reset in 1993 when there were slight road alterations to accommodate the Retail Park on the opposite side of the A638, latterly A1 until the Doncaster A1(M) motorway was built in the early 1960s. Before that this was The Great North Road. The metal attachment cast by Brayshaw & Booth of Liversedge is shown to its full height with 4 fixing points onto the backing stone which may extend about 20cm below soil level. Grade II listed 1151454.

Old milestone
615 of these milestones were set up all over the old West Riding by the family firm of Gill and Frank Stead, stonemasons, of Mirfield. They did the work in 12 months. Over half of the milestones are still by the roadside. Looking towards Doncaster over Lady's Bridge, the thickness of the backing stone can be appreiated.
