Ventilation shaft over the Shildon Tunnel
This shaft provides ventilation for the Shildon Tunnel on the Bishop Auckland to Darlington railway. The fearsome array of ironmongery on the top is intended to act as a deterrent to anyone foolish enough to think of climbing up and looking down the shaft.
