Margate: Buenos Ayres
Buenos Ayres is the intriguing name of this short road which runs from near the railway station to the seafront. A Google search failed to find any obvious explanation of how it acquired this name. Perhaps it was just a basic translation into Spanish from "Good airs", as there is a fine uninterrupted view of Margate's sandy beach and its bracing breeze! Anyway the Palace Hotel on the corner is one of several properties on the road offering accommodation to visitors.

Margate: The Shakespeare Public House
Alas for those thinking that the Bard might have had some connection with Margate and supped his ale on the seafront here, this Shepherd Neame house at No. 1 Canterbury Road near the railway station commemorates the steam engine No. 70004 William Shakespeare, one of two Britannia Class locomotives that were allocated to the Southern Region of British Railways in the 1950s, specifically for hauling the "Golden Arrow" trains through Kent, although it must be said, not via Margate!

The Shakespeare, Margate
Formerly a Shepherd Neame house, now under new management according to the chalked sign, and looking rather scruffy. The sign advertises an event in February, the view is March and the pub does not look very lively - is it still open? Remarkably it has managed to hang on to its old style Shepherd Neame inn sign, seen here in close-up Image

Inn sign, The Shakespeare, Margate
An old style coloured Shepherd Neame sign, retained after the pub changed hands. The locomotive is 70004 'William Shakespeare', one of two BR standard 7MT locomotives allocated to the Southern Region in 1951, probably for 'political' reasons, as the region had a vast number of equivalent locomotives inherited from the Southern Railway. For the rest of the pub, see Image
