The West Croydon Line veers left
Up to this point, the line runs along the bed of the former Croydon Canal. In earlier times it continued to do so, running straight on, but remodelling of the complicated series of flyovers and junctions ahead led to a realignment.

Path parallel to railway
This follows the railway as far as St. James's Road. As the railway was laid on the bed of the Croydon Canal, it has been suggested this was once the towpath.

Junctions at Selhurst, with Croydon skyline beyond
The junctions at Selhurst mark the point where trains from two London terminals - Victoria and London Bridge - meet north of Croydon and are in turn shuffled and distributed either to the main lines south through East Croydon, serving the Weald and the coast, or the more suburban south-western destinations reached through West Croydon. Taken from the slow lines between East Croydon and Victoria. In the background a southbound express on the fast lines; in the middle distance, the line from West Croydon towards London Bridge passes below the photographer's position, whilst a spur from this climbs rightwards to join the slow Victoria lines just south of Selhurst station.
