The Arroyo Arms, Edgehill Road, Carlisle - March 2017 (1)
Only five pubs were built in Carlisle by the State Management Scheme between 1945 and 1971, all on "greenfield" sites to serve new housing estates. Opened on 23 June 1958, the Arroyo Arms commemorates the battle of Arroyo des Molinos at which the 2nd Battalion of the 34th Infantry Regiment (later the Border Regiment) fought. Originally, the pub sign was a model military drummer, but this has long disappeared was believed lost (although the sole customer on 8 March thought it may be preserved in a local museum). That customer was correct as the sign is in the Museum of Military Life at Carlisle Castle - see: Image] . Sold to the Greenall Whitley Group on 2 April 1973, the pub is still trading. For more information see Image . The sign is for Harraby Library, which used to be located at the school. Following redevelopment of the site, a 'Library Link' facility is now available at Harraby Community Campus, which opened in 2016. The school buildings seen here were demolished in 2013 but the electricity substation, and house on the left, are still there (2018).

The former Harraby Secondary School (5)
For more information see Image . This is the Gladys Spedding Theatre, opened in 2001 (when the school was called North Cumbria Technology College). Most of the school buildings were demolished in 2013. Parts of the theatre were also removed (eg the projecting triangular canopy) but the auditorium was retained, and incorporated into the development of a new community campus (see http://www.harrabycommunitycentre.org.uk/Community-Theatre ). A sign on the wall to the left says 'Carlisle College'. During 2011 about half of the college's staff and students were temporarily relocated to vacant buildings at Harraby, while their own campus near the city centre was undergoing redevelopment.
