St George's Churchyard
St George's Church was originally a small medieval church but it was replaced in 1885-7 by a large town church. The churchyard though still has the feel of the time that Beckenham was just a Kent village.

Gravestone of Harriet Staunton, St George's, Beckenham
Although the inscription is now badly weathered, Harriet's name and dates are still quite clear. Her death sparked the infamous "Penge Murder" trial of 1877. Perhaps a miscarriage of justice occurred but the case certainly helped to establish the Court of Appeal. (Previously, no appeal against a death sentence was permitted.)
