Although the bull on the sign is the traditional farm animal the sign is however an ancient and widespread sign. The bull may well have begun by referring to a papal bull, the leaden seal attached to the pope's edicts (Latin bulla).

There are more crowns than any other pub sign. In earlier days it may well have started when the inn was on Crown property. Without doubt the numbers have grown as a symbol of loyalty to the Throne.
