Norman Gateway, Lewes Castle
Lewes Castle stands at the highest point of Lewes. It was built in 1069 by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, who was the brother-in-Law of William the Conqueror. This is the main Norman gateway to the castle and lies just beyond the Barbican Gate - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3119662

Lewes Castle Keep
The castle is almost 1000 years old. The land was given to William de Warenne by William the conqueror at christmas time in 1066. The building of the Castle was completed 300 years later with the magnificent Barbican http://www.sussexpast.co.uk/property/site.php?site_id=12

The Gatehouse, Lewes Castle, East Sussex
This Norman (11th century) gatehouse is inside the later (14th century) Barbican Gatehouse. Again, flint from surrounding chalk lands is a dominant material. The house beyond is from around 1830, Castlegate House.
