Blue plaques on house on Summerdown Road, Eastbourne
George Orwell describes a grim time there in his essay 'Such, Such Were the Joys'. Orwell himself admits "In general, one's memories of any period must necessarily weaken as one moves away from it". The staff allegedly "presided over the school like cruel gods, fawning over the richer children and constantly reminding Orwell (a scholarship boy) of his second-class standing and the relative poverty of his parents". Others, e.g. Henry Longhurst, have different recollections. It may be that memories from one side of the wealth divide did genuinely differ from those from the other side.

The Eastbourne Workhouse stood on this site from 1834 to 1919. It later became St Mary's Hospital. The Head Nurse at the hospital between 1924 and 1948 was Miss Mary Letheren and when the hospital was demolished in 1990 this new road was named after her.
