Sussex Glass Bevelling Company, Castle Street
Head north back up Preston Street and turn east into Castle Street. Both this street and Stone Street were built for the traders and workers of an urban economy as the town expanded in size. The glazing company was established in 1919 on these premises and is now being run by the third generation of the same family. 68-69, Western Road, Brighton
The building on the left is number 67, see Image for full details. Number 68 in the middle was originally an ironmongers for nearly half a century before being expanded into by Hetheringtons the drapers who started in Image and expanded into both 68 and 69, with the former the last store to be merged with the others in 1899. The business survived until 1950 though 68 had been dispensed with in 1939 becoming a grocers for nearly 25 years, a TV rental shop for nearly 30, punctuated by the brief sojourn of a travel agent. From the mid 1990s retailed workwear before becoming a couple of ladies wear stores. After a couple of years empty or being used as a short lease discount store it has been occupied by a second hand electronics shop. Number 69 was a butcher for a couple of decades later becoming a drapers, first under Hawley & Hunter and from 1883 expanded into by Hetheringtons who would stay until they closed in 1950. Since then the store has seen a steady turnover of businesses with a jeweller being the longest incumbent. Sole Trader now trades in Churchill Square whilst its replacement Gamestation went bust in 2012. Since 2015 it has been home to Eden who retail perfumes. 68 1845-1898 - IRONMONGERS (Packham & son) 1899-1939 - DRAPERS (Hetheringtons) 1940-1964 - GROCERS (Progressive Stores) 1966-1987 - TV RENTALS (Visionhire) 1988-1990 - TRAVEL AGENT (Lunn Poly) 1991-1994 - TV RENTALS (Visionhire 1991, Granada 1993-94) 1999-2002 - WORKWEAR (Alexandra) 2004-2013 - LADIESWEAR (Distinctive, Expose) 2016 - MOBILE PHONES (E Tech Zone) 69 1845-1864 - BUTCHER (TH King 1845-61, Samuel Phipps 1862, W Selmes 1864) 1865-1873 - DRESS WAREHOUSE (Horace Holman) 1874-1950 - DRAPER (Hawley & Hunter 1874-80, Hetheringtons 1883-1950) 1954 - FURRIERS (MB Anthony Ltd) 1956-1960 - LADIES OUTFITTERS (Blacks Teen & Twenty Shop) 1962-1982 - JEWELLERS (Sanders & Co) 1985-1987 - GIFT SHOP (Neals) 1989-2001 - SHOE SHOP (Top Footwear for Men 1989-94, Sole Trader 1996-2001) 2002-2012 - COMPUTER GAMES (Gamestation) 2015-2016 - PERFUMES (Eden)

70-71, Western Road, Brighton
Number 71 was the original store of Hetherington’s the drapery which opened in 1874 and expanded into neighbouring 70, Image as well as Image and Image closing in 1950. Prior to Hetherington’s arrival the store had spent much of its previous life as a drapery with the exception of a couple of years as a mourning warehouse. When the store closed it was replaced by Dorothy Perkins who remained until the late 1970s though it continued retailing clothes into the 1980s. After a decade as a film developers it became a mobile phone store belonging to Orange until it merged with T Mobile into EE and the store was deemed superfluous. Since 2011 it has been a second hand electronics store which dealt with computers, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, computer games and various accessories. Judging by the posters on the window it has now closed or will close soon. Number 70 first appears as a food store before becoming a drapers in 1879, first as Hawley & Hunter and then Hetheringtons. When the latter closed in 1950 another firm, Chipperfield & Butler took over, see Image, until they closed the store in 1968. A period as a shoe shop was followed by another as a boutique, then a mobile phone store before a decade as an optician who made moved from Image Since 2013 it has been retailing goods for parties. 70 1845-1877 - DAIRYMAN, FRUITERER, GREENGROCER (William Evans 1845-65, Mrs Wyer 1867-77) 1879-1968 - DRAPERS (Hawley & Hunter 1879-80, Hetheringtons 1883-1950, Chipperfield & Butler 1951-68) 1969-1976 - SHOE SHOP (Peter Lord) 1978 - FASHION SHOP (Made in Heaven) 1980-1996 - BOUTIQUE (Denim Den) 1999-2001 - MOBILE PHONES (The Pocket Phone Shop) 2005-2012 - OPTICIAN (Optical Express) 2013-2016 - PARTY GOODS (Partido) 71 1845-1867 - DRAPER (Henry Gould 1845-64, J Sayers 1865-67) 1868-1870 - MOURNING WAREHOUSE (Kelly & Craig) 1871-1873 - LINEN DRAPER & SILK MERCHANT (William Plumer) 1874-1950 - DRAPER (Hetheringtons) 1951-1974 - LADIESWEAR (Dorothy Perkins) 1978-1982 - CLOTHES (Jean Machine) 1983-1986 - LADIESWEAR (CB Cash & Carry) 1985-1996 - FILM DEVELOPERS (Bonus Print) 1999-2009 - MOBILE PHONES (The Orange Shop) 2011-2016 - SECOND HAND ELECTRONICS (Replay)

Three shops that have remained individual units. Number 65 on the left spent much of the second half of the 19th century as either a jewellers or drapers. One of those WJ Wade owned another shop at Image which eventually expanded into a department store. His successor, Lea & Son also expanded and rebuilt Image and stayed here for 64 years. By the 1970s the premises had become a restaurant then a ladies wear stow before a couple of decades as an offbeat shoe shop, the place to go for those pairs of Doctor Martens which reached your thigh. Since 2010 it has been a travel against. Number 66 is the three storey block in the middle which spent the last half of the 19th century as either a fancy wool shop or an ecclesiastical embroidery. In 1904 it was taken over by Sainsbury’s who stayed until 1970 the shop having seen the change from counter to self service the previous decade. The firm had a shop in Churchill Square which closed in the 1980s bringing an end to their presence in the centre of Brighton until 2006 when they returned to Image The shop then spent sixteen years as a ladies wear store, another eight as a home furnishers, five as a specialist surf shop and the last decade as a travel agents. Number 67 on the right was a builder and stonemason for seventeen years from 1845, then after a brief period as a toy shop spent nearly a century as a shoe shop the vast majority as Freeman Hardy & Willis. Another brief period as a jeweller was followed by Dolland & Aitchison for a quarter of a century until they moved into new premises in the revamped Churchill Square in 1998. Since 2004 the shop has been a branch of Subway. The current unit was merged together in 2009 by the last occupants, Jamie Oliver’s Recipease, which closed in 2014 and has been empty ever since. Food plays a large part in number 72’s history much of which was spent as J Lyons tea shop starting in 1911 when they took over an existing restaurant to its closure in 1972. From that point it became a clothing store and later an optician, who would move a couple of doors down to Image, before ending its individual existence as an outdoor equipment store. Number 73 has had a more varied history with the last five decades of the 19th century spent as an artists studio then another 60 odd years as a milliners, one of whom Lea & Son also traded at Image and Image A decade as a leather store was followed by stints as a gift shop, greeting card store, before spending the 1990s as a hi fi dealer.
