Canon Slade School playing field
The school was founded in 1855 by Canon James Slade and moved to its current site in 1956. Alumni include William Lever, first Viscount Leverhulme, Arthur Rostron, Mariner and captain of R.M.S. Carpathia at the time it went to the aid of the stricken vessel R.M.S. Titanic, and the actors Maxine Peake and Katy Cavanagh.

Bridge over a railway
The line from Bolton to Blackburn runs under the bridge. The fencing at the far end would only have been constructed many decades after the bridge was built to enclose the playing fields of Canon Slade School which moved here in 1956. Before the building of the school and fence the bridge would have given direct access to what is now the A676, a main road into Bolton from Bradshaw. Given the bridge's ornate iron balustrades it is possible that it was built for the (exclusive?) use of the Ashworth family whose Georgian mansion, The Oaks, was nearby.

Bridge over the railway line
The bridge was once on a lane leading from Bradshaw Brow to The Oaks - the residence of the cotton barons, the Ashworth family. The mansion is long since demolished and the bridge now leads from the grounds of Canon Slade School to the school's playing fields. The pathway behind the camera is now gated to prevent access to the school grounds.
